Abstract

Plastic bottle waste, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET), requires proper handling to support recycling and reduce environmental impact. This study aims to design, manufacture, and evaluate a plastic bottle shredding machine as an appropriate technology for reducing PET bottle waste size. The research used an engineering design method consisting of need identification, design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and performance analysis. The machine was designed using Autodesk Fusion, while fabrication and testing were conducted at the Mechanical Engineering Workshop of Politeknik Jambi from May to December 2026. Optimization was carried out on the cutting blade and inlet hopper to improve shredding performance. The test results showed that before optimization, the machine processed 700 g of plastic bottles and produced 326.67 g of shredded plastic, with an efficiency of 46.67% and an operating time of 20 minutes. After optimization, the machine processed 400 g of plastic bottles and produced 371.67 g of shredded plastic, with an efficiency of 92.92% and an operating time of 5 minutes. The shredding capacity increased from 0.98 kg/hour to 4.46 kg/hour. These results indicate that blade and hopper optimization significantly improved machine performance.
