Corrections and Retractions

Corrections

At-Tajdid: Jurnal Pendidikan dan Pemikiran Islam publishes corrections when an error or omission in a published article requires a transparent amendment while the work remains substantially reliable. The appropriate response is determined by the consequences of the error, rather than solely by whether it originated with the authors or the journal.

1. WHEN A CORRECTION IS APPROPRIATE

A correction may be appropriate for:

  • Inaccuracies in numerical values, labels, calculations, tables, figures, or supplementary materials that can be remedied without compromising the article’s overall reliability.

  • Incorrect author details or an approved change to authorship.

  • Omitted or inaccurate statements concerning funding, competing interests, acknowledgments, or other declarations.

  • Errors in references, attribution, or factual information that require public clarification.

  • Localised problems whose effects on the publication record can be adequately resolved through a specific amendment.

Corrections must not conceal findings that are fundamentally unreliable. When an amendment substantially changes the conclusions, the journal must assess whether a correction remains an adequate response. Authorship eligibility and agreement on authorship changes are governed by Authorship and Contributorship.

2. REQUEST AND ASSESSMENT

Authors or readers requesting a correction should provide the article’s DOI, identify the affected text or material, specify the proposed amendment, and explain the supporting grounds. Authors must promptly notify the journal of significant errors they discover.

The responsible editor evaluates the implications for the article and may seek responses from the authors or independent expert advice. Evidence suggesting a wider integrity concern is examined under Integrity Investigations. Author agreement is sought where appropriate, but authors cannot prevent a correction that the journal determines is necessary.

3. CORRECTION NOTICE

A formal correction notice identifies the affected article, explains the error and the amendment, and describes any implications for the interpretation or conclusions. The notice is dated, clearly labelled, freely available, and linked to the original article.

Minor typographical or technical adjustments that have no material effect may be documented through an appropriate version note or administrative update. Substantive changes must never be introduced without disclosure.

Requests to amend an author’s name, including changes involving sensitive identity information, are handled respectfully and with suitable privacy protections. Public notices should avoid unnecessary disclosure of previous personal details or the reasons for a name change.

Retractions

At-Tajdid: Jurnal Pendidikan dan Pemikiran Islam issues retractions to inform readers that a publication is substantially unreliable or affected by a serious publication-integrity problem that cannot be adequately remedied through correction. Retraction primarily serves to safeguard the scholarly record rather than penalise authors.

1. GROUNDS FOR CONSIDERATION

Retraction may be considered when there is:

  • Clear evidence that findings are unreliable because of a major error, fabricated or falsified material, or materially inappropriate analysis.

  • Substantial plagiarism or undisclosed redundant publication that compromises the publication record.

  • Unauthorised use of material, infringement, or another serious rights issue that cannot be adequately resolved through a more limited remedy.

  • A serious breach of research ethics.

  • A compromised or manipulated assessment process that leaves insufficient grounds for confidence in the publication.

  • A significant undisclosed competing interest that improperly influenced interpretation or assessment and cannot be adequately addressed through disclosure and correction.

Retraction may result from an honest error as well as misconduct. Decisions require evidence supporting the assessment of reliability or integrity; establishing personal intent is not always necessary before amending the scholarly record.

2. DECISION SAFEGUARDS

An authorised editor without a relevant conflict of interest determines whether retraction is justified. The publisher supports the implementation of that decision. Examination of evidence and opportunities for relevant parties to respond are governed by Integrity Investigations.

An unsupported allegation, an authorship dispute by itself, disagreement with a defensible interpretation, or an error adequately addressed by correction will not normally warrant retraction. Posting a disclosed preprint does not constitute redundant journal publication under the journal’s Preprint Policy.

Authors are ordinarily notified and given a reasonable opportunity to respond. However, their consent is not required when the evidence justifies retraction. Measures necessary to protect readers must not be postponed indefinitely because authors do not respond or an institutional process remains unresolved.

3. RETRACTION NOTICE

The retraction notice identifies the article and its DOI, names the party issuing the retraction, and explains the reasons supported by evidence. It clearly separates established findings from matters that remain unresolved. Authors’ agreement or disagreement may be accurately documented.

The language of the notice must remain factual and proportionate. The involvement of multiple authors or articles must not, by itself, imply collective responsibility. Related cases may be investigated together, but action concerning each article must have an adequate evidential basis.

Every retraction notice is dated, freely accessible, clearly labelled as a Retraction, and permanently linked to the affected article. The article normally remains available with a prominent and unambiguous warning that it has been retracted, rather than being deleted.
